Crypto Scam @ Dating & Matrimonial App

As we know, large numbers of people are following cultural and traditional approaches, when it comes to dating and marriage in India. So, the matrimonial-cum-dating apps are still minting good money over it, although they become the center of a high level of scams.

As per the cases reported to the ODFC Cybercrime Helpdesk, many people become victims of crypto trading and investment scams run by gangs using matrimonial apps, live video streaming apps and WhatsApp chat etc.

MODUS OPERANDI:

Stage — 1

The scammer (girl) typically creates a profile with fancy pictures/videos appearing to be genuine and gets the verified tag on her profile on the matrimonial app. She sends a request to connect a potential victim (boy). Thereafter within a short span of time, she and her fake family member(s) have been winning the trust of the victim using multiple video calls, talking to his family members and finalizing the schedule of marriage etc.

Stage — 2

Further, after creating an emotional affair for a month or more, the girl, and her family (scammers gang) convince 'potential victims' to invest in crypto, by showing their ultra-modern lifestyle. The target person (victim) is psychologically pressurized by a scammer (girl) for taking quick decisions to invest in crypto, then he transfers a big chunk of money to a crypto investment platform (or UPI QR code) provided by her over a private chat. After some transactions, the victim's account gets blocked at that crypto platform. But the scammer keeps asking the victim to make further investments to secure the struck money. To get more insight on such cases, please feel free to contact us.

What is Sextortion?

Sextortion? You’ve never heard of that word before! Um...extortion related to sex-related crimes? Everyday growing media and news coverage about Sextortion makes us think, it’s the new word for blackmailing?

Sextortion is a type of scam can take place both against male and female victims (although the majority of the victims are primarily males). In such crimes, the culprit usually entices the victim for nude video chat online, which are then saved by the culprit for extortion, i.e., known as Sextortion. To learn more, please go to the ODFC website: sextortion.in

In the Sextortion cases, typically victims come in contact with perpetrators through social media, dating/matrimonial apps etc. The profiles that they connect with, are mostly fake. The people behind the profile are mostly cyber criminals, whose main motive is to extort money from the victims. These fake profiles are made to look very attractive so that people fall prey to the Sextortion scams.

Modus Operandi — 1

The people who operate these fake profiles first talk to the victims normally for a few days, and then induce them to share their intimate/nude videos with them. As soon as, criminals get access to private videos of the victim, they start extorting the sender for money. They blackmail victim person, if he does not pay up, they will upload private videos on the social media or share it with victims' family and friends.

Modus Operandi — 2

In the Sextortion scam, mostly men are being contacted on Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp chat by women with attractive profiles, who immediately ask them for a video call for fun. When the person agrees to it, they record the private video and start blackmailing/extorting the victim for money, threatening to share the video with his relatives and friends.

How does ODFC help to Sextortion Victims?

The OZG Digital Forensic Center (ODFC) offers help to sextortion victims by providing critical resources and support. We help victims navigate the complexities of reporting incidents to the concerned law enforcement agencies such as your local cybercrime police, ensuring evidences are preserved for investigations.

The ODFC collaborates with cybercrime units to facilitate the removal of harmful content from online platforms and offers emotional support through online counseling services.

The ODFC also educate the public about recognizing warning signs of sextortion and encourage victims to report incidents to the national cybercrime portal, fostering a safer online environment.

2. QualysGuard

A cloud-based solution that provides scalable vulnerability management and compliance features.

3. OpenVAS:

An open-source scanner that regularly updates its detection capabilities and supports a wide range of systems.

4. Acunetix:

Specializes in web application security, detecting vulnerabilities like SQL injection and XSS.

5. Nmap:

ODFC: Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT)

The VAPT should be performed on a regular basis which evaluates an organization’s ability to protect its networks, applications, endpoints and users from external or internal attempts to circumvent its security controls to gain unauthorized access to protected assets.

The OZG Digital Forensics Center (ODFC) -

ODFC offers Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) services designed to identify and mitigate security risks in IT systems.

The methodology involves -

1️⃣ - Identifying Vulnerabilities:

Assessing both internal and external assets to pinpoint weaknesses.

2️⃣ - Risk Classification:

Categorizing vulnerabilities by severity for prioritized remediation.

3️⃣ - Penetration Testing:

Simulating attacks to evaluate the effectiveness of security measures.

4️⃣ - Continuous Monitoring:

Implementing ongoing assessments to adapt to new threats.

These services enhance an organization's security posture by providing actionable insights and compliance support, ensuring robust protection against cyber threats.

How do the costs of vulnerability assessments compare to penetration testing?

The costs of vulnerability assessments and penetration testing differ significantly due to their methodologies and depth:

- Vulnerability Assessments:

Typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 annually, depending on the scope and frequency of scans. They are largely automated, making them more cost-effective and quicker to execute.

- Penetration Testing:

Costs can vary widely, from $4,000 to over $100,000, depending on complexity and the expertise required. This is due to the manual processes involved in simulating real attacks and providing in-depth analysis.

Overall, vulnerability assessments are generally more budget-friendly than penetration tests.
